Semyon Frolov returns to his native village of Krutye Gorki, as chairman of the Kolkhoz. The hero will have to sort out the embezzlement, convince and attract to his side the majority of proprietors, reconicle his feelings for Anna, whom he once loved, and give her the right to decide their future, when Anna's husband unexpectedly returns from prison.

In 1905 Germany, Evgeny Narezhny, a talented bridge engineer and son of a Russian émigré, rejects lucrative offers to serve Russia. Arriving in St. Petersburg during the 1905 revolution, he focuses on science, believing it can solve global issues, unlike his Bolshevik wife, Elena Chernova. As a renowned scientist, Narezhny is repulsed by capitalism and is forced to reconsider his views on the revolutionaries’ struggle.

Stepan Kochkarin, the chairman of one of the leading Altai collective farms, a former front-line soldier, intends to unite the machinery and personnel of the neighboring backward farms into a single complex on the central farmstead, but not everyone supports him. A number of issues, including his re-election, are postponed until the fall. The harvesting season arrives and the chairman carries out the harvesting in the most difficult natural conditions without losses.
